The birth of CVSA

Historical (2009):

The Vanuatu students studying at the Australian National University (ANU) and the University of Canberra (UC) have formed a students association and named it the ‘Vanuatu ANU-UC Students Association, based in Canberra, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).

The number of Vanuatu students including their families studying in Canberra has gradually increased now to 20 and this has necessitated the need to have a well organised body that will help to coordinate Vanuatu tertiary students’ needs and concerns in Canberra. Given the increased interaction between Vanuatu and Australia on a number of areas including academic field, training and capacity building of government officials in Canberra, it is important to have such organisation in place to ensure that coordination of information and activities to and from the Vanuatu students can be done through the association. The association hopes to build networks with other Vanuatu students studying in other institutions around Australia and abroad in continuing virtual debates on different government policies. This association is headed by Johnny Koanapo as the President, Jerryson Lapi as Secretary/Treasurer, with members including Mark Mera, William Arudovo, John Ezra and John Sala.

Earlier this year, Hon. Prime Minister Natapei visited the students and reiterated the current government’s intention to encourage more young people to pursue tertiary education abroad. Based on this, the association is calling upon the government to increase its commitment in encouraging more Vanuatu citizens to pursue tertiary education at the Masters and doctorate (Phd) level.
