By Amanda Powell (University of Canberra, Monitor Online)

Four University of Canberra students have received a Prime Minister’s Pacific-Australia (PMPA) Award.

The awards are funded by AusAID and are open to postgraduate Australian Development Scholarship (ADS) and Australian Leadership Award Scholarships (ALAS) students from the Pacific Region, including Papua New Guinea and East Timor, and include a work placement with a relevant Australian organisation.

Julie Maragen Yeta Ihembe, Steven Tumae, Kilala Chee and Stanley Trief received their award from the Minister for Tertiary Education Chris Evans at a function on November 23. Ms Ihembe, Mr Tumae and Ms Chee are from Papua New Guinea and Mr Trief is from Vanuatu.

The awardees also got the chance to meet Prime Minister Julia Gillard at a meet and greet at Parliament House.

Mr Trief says he’s honoured to receive the award. He is currently studying a Master of International Customs Law and works as an IT Manager for the Customs Department in Vanuatu.

He’s hoping to secure a work placement in Australian Customs to further his knowledge about the use of IT in the workforce.

“I am looking forward to assisting the Vanuatu Customs Administration meet its reform and modernisation efforts to be able to handle the challenges we face today in the contemporary role of customs,” he said.
