The students spent over 2 hours at the Pavilion Hotel in Canberra on Tuesday 21st April 2010, to get firsthand updates from the Minister and his delegation (Attorney General, Director General Finance and Economic Management, Director Customs and Inland Revenue, 1st Political Appointee MFEM) of what we must say are very exciting developments taking place back home (despite the political and other related challenges). It was a good evening and we thoroughly enjoyed the visit with our leaders.
The delegation were on their way to Tasmania to sign the Tax Information Exchange Agreement between Vanuatu and Australia.
CVSA took the golden opportunity to also present again to the Minister CVSA’s call on the Government to help rectify the current scholarships policy stalemate re: 2 year bonding, variation, etc. A copy of the CVSA's letter to AusAID and to the Minister of Education was again delivered to the Minister and he mentioned that he would take the matter up with the Minister (Education/Foreign Affairs) when he is back in Vanuatu after mission. He advised that those who wish to pursue further studies beyond current program should make contact with the Government(and possibly AusAID) well in advance to avoid disappointments.
CVSA also raised the issue of curriculum development to address foundational maths and business related subjects at primary/secondary school levels. The Minister and officials fully agreed that this was a major issue. At least the Association played its part in voicing the issue also.
It was a great evening – a unique experience as these kinds of occasions come around only once in a blue moon! At least we could share some a lighthearted evening of laughter esp. with jokes, drinks and food all around.
