Average Canberra winter temperatures can get up to a maximum temperature of 5°C and a minimum of -8°C. We therefore recommend the following clothing for the Canberra winter:
- 100% wool jerseys
Notes:
- 100% wool jerseys are much better than synthetic materials.
- There are different types of wool out there, but as long as the clothing is 100% of that type of wool, it should keep you warm.
- Thermal wear (tops, bottoms and socks). The Kathmandu shop refers to these as polypro thermal wear
- Wear a scarf and a beanie that covers your ears
While sleeping:
- We recommend “Winter-weight duvets” over other duvets
- Hot water bottles or hotties are great to use under the bed covers.
Notes:
- It is not about how much layer of clothing you can wear to keep you warm, it is about the right type of clothing. The Kathmandu shop has a layering guide which you can refer to for guidance.
- It is expensive to keep warm, however we recommend that you make a few financial sacrifices to avoid being miserable and be able to enjoy your studies;-)
Tip: To avoid getting flu during winter, which you cannot afford while studying, we recommend you get a flu vaccination for you and each of your family for every winter. ANU clinic provides vaccinations for $20 per adult (this fee is not covered by OHSC).
